'Marc Mommaas is één van die Nederlandse jazzmusici die met succes jaren geleden de overstap naar Amerika, het beloofde land, maakte. Een hard bestaan, waar hij heeft leren knokken voor erkenning, maar met succes. Muziek is waar het om gaat, zegt hij over zijn verbijf in New York, de rest is gewoon sociale bullshit. Hij heeft zijn plek veroverd in de New Yorkse jazzscene. Af en toe speelt hij in Nederland, zoals onlangs met het Amina Figarova Sextet.

Opgegroeid in een artistiek gezin (zijn moeder pianiste en operazangeres en zijn vader kunstschilder), kwam hij al als kind in aanraking met Jazz. Sinds 1997 woont hij in New York, waar hij de Manhattan School of Music voltooide en verschillende bands leidt. Mommaas komt uit dezelfde lichting als Eric Vloeimans en Michiel Borstlap en heeft hetzelfde talent voor toegankelijke en toch uitdagende composities. In Landmarc speelt hij in een bijzondere samenstelling met drummer Tony Moreno en maar liefst twee gitaristen: Nate Radley en Vic Juris. ‘Mommaas is a gifted tenor saxophonist; the music has its own nearly classical beauty’, aldus het gerenommeerde tijdschrift Jazz Times.

.."You’ll notice that there’s no bassist listed. That’s deliberate. Mommaas’ latest group grew out of his duo with Moreno, which grew to a trio with the addition of Radley, with Juris and Abbasi added for their color and contrapuntal contributions. “The concept of the CD is about independence of time with the sole purpose of widening the gates towards a deeper form of interaction and storyline development,” say Mommaas. “It is the artist’s mission to develop and protect [the concept of] freedom and to express the contrasts of life.” Mommaas’ serpentine sax inventions – aided by the bluesy, spacey and swinging plectral prowess of Juris, Abbasi and Radley, and buoyed by Moreno’s lickety-split drumming – intricately delivers a devilishly delightful nine-track CD that does indeed translate a virtual Rosetta Stone of rhythms, harmonies and melodies into real life stories.
